Lecture: The Simpsons and their Mathematical Secrets

When: 23rd March 2017 @ 4.00pm
Where: Cedars Hall, The Liberty, Wells, Somerset, BA5 2ST

In the first of two science-based events in Cedars Hall, the Somerset-born particle physicist and TV science guru, Simon Singh, justifies all those hours on the sofa with the TV controller: “It’s the world’s most popular TV series and nobody knows that there’s this band of mathematicians at the heart of its writing team. People don’t realise that they smuggle maths into the series.” Whether it’s Homer referencing Fermat’s last theorem or Apu reciting pi to its 40,000th decimal place, this fascinating lecture based on Singh’s bestselling book, explores a secret world of narcissistic numbers and maths riddles.

Comedy Show: Warning – Contains Nerdity!

When: 23rd March 2017 @ 7.00pm
Where: Cedars Hall, The Liberty, Wells, Somerset, BA5 2ST

In the second of our two science-based events, two-thirds of Festival of the Spoken Nerd, science comedians Helen Arney and Steve Mould, bring their unique mix of interactive experiments, comedy and songs to Wells. Don’t miss this laugh-a-minute extravaganza (rounded to the nearest whole laugh; actually 1.12 laughs per minute) that will tickle your ribs and light your Bunsen burner, whatever your scientific knowledge.

Recommended for ages 12 and over.

Event in the Hall

Wells Cathedral School Showcase Concert

When: 26th March 2017 @ 8.00pm
Where: Cedars Hall, The Liberty, Wells, Somerset, BA5 2ST

Mendelssohn was just 18, the same age as our most senior students, when he wrote his celebrated Octet for Strings. In this final showcase before Easter, Wells young musicians present this work alongside other particularly accomplished performances from the term which we thought you’d like to hear.

Concerto Extravaganza

When: 29th & 30th March 2017 @ 7.00pm
Where: Cedars Hall, The Liberty, Wells, Somerset, BA5 2ST

Who says an orchestral concert has to follow the standard overture-concerto-symphony format? Our intrepid young musicians think otherwise, and are proud to present three of their colleagues in fascinating concertos suited to the wonderful intimate acoustic of Cedars Hall.
